Huawei Mate XT Breaking the Norms with the First Tri-Folding Phone

Huawei Mate XT

The tech space has become a humdrum especially when it comes to mobile phones. Each performs great, offers great camera versatility, displays are nice & crispy, and batteries last a whole day. There is nothing to complain about except the innovation. Something more fun to use that offers utility as well.

Enters – folding phones. Samsung made the first commercially available folding phone with their original Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Flip. Then years have gone by and there wasn’t any significant alteration to them. Since then phone manufacturers have been trying to get something new out of these folding phones.

Mate XT Ultimate Design – Huawei became the first manufacturer to actually push out a commercially available tri-folding phone that looks stunning. Fortunately, I got my hands on one of these bad boys. It has almost the same screen size as that of a tablet. The cameras take fine photos. Speakers might be a little underperforming for your occasional meeting on video calls or consuming media but they are okay.

Speaking of which, I will provide a detailed outlook on its performance, cameras, design, and more in this article. So, join me as I unfold the real-life usage of the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design: Performance

I started the review with the performance because none of the reviews out there has covered this aspect of the tri-folding phone. But let me. Mate XT is powered by Kirin 9010 chipset based on 7nm architecture. It comes with just one option of RAM which is 16 gigs.

I think 16 gigs is sufficient enough when coupled with the Kirin 9010.How does the processor perform when put through intensive testing?I played heavy games like Call of Duty Mobile to check to the peak of its abilities.

I wanted the test to be fair and square (not hindered by internet issues), so I called my ISP at their Spanish numero de Spectrum to upgrade my internet plan.

There wasn’t any lag and the game ran pretty smooth on the big screen. I was able to come out as MVP twice. Should I participate in an eSports tournament? (pun definitely intended because I was on level 1).

Apart from the gaming performance, I wasn’t able to use any of the Google apps so, I can’t say how it will hold up with them. However, it’s great at multitasking. I had plenty of screens to run some Microsoft Apps along with the browser while I listened to Despacito.

All in all, it’s a fine performer whether it’s gaming or running your regular apps.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design: Display(s) and Design

Why is it called a tri-folding phone? While I figured it out, it isn’t because it folds three times but it has three different displays to work with. When fully opened, it has a huge 10.2-inch display.

Half-folded it has almost the same screen size and aspect ratio as that of the other folding phones at 7.9-inch, and finally when fully folded its outer display is 6.4-inch.

All of the screens are 90Hz providing you with a smooth experience. It also consumes less battery than the 120Hz display and there is not much of a difference between the two.

As for the design, it’s phenomenal. When fully folded, it has three layers that when combined have the thickness of a regular folding phone. One crease is slightly more noticeable than the other but that too is when you are in a highly lit environment.

Not going to lie, this looks stunning when fully unfolded. It is one of the thinnest devices I have seen after the new iPads from Apple.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design: Cameras

Let’s talk about the cameras. Starting with the specs, we have a 50MP main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and another 12MP optical zoom lens which can go up to 5.5x. On the front, we have an 8MP camera.

That was on paper, but what kind of photos and videos do you actually get with it? I have always been a fan of Huawei’s post-capture processing and after all those gap years due to the problems with the US Government, the camera is still great.

The main shooter captures great photos and since it is a bigger sensor, the night photography stands out on this foldable. The ultra-wide lens is just okay and that 5.5x zoom is brilliant when you have enough light to capture every detail. The selfie camera isn’t something that will earn my praise but it does the job.

Overall, the camera experience is good but I won’t recommend it for people who take a lot of photos and videos. You should go with the Pixel Fold if foldable is your thing.

Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design: My Verdict

The pricing of this foldable might surprise you if that’s the first review you are reading about a foldable. With a $2,800 price tag, you might find it hard to purchase. If you are in the market for a foldable device and you are a geek like me, you can give it a shot.

That said, keep that in your mind, that Google Apps aren’t ‘really’ supported on this phone, though I have seen some workarounds where people have installed Google Pay, Google Chrome, etc.
